Thank you for choosing to return me as your Member of Parliament for Runnymede and Weybridge.
Over the last seven years, I have tried hard to balance my role as your local MP with my Ministerial duties in the Government. I hope that the result last Thursday is an indication that I have got that balance right. I will continue in this Parliament to do everything in my power to be worthy of the trust placed in me by the residents of Runnymede and Weybridge.
Thank you also for your kind congratulations on my re-appointment as Chancellor of the Exchequer. It continues to be a huge honour and a great privilege to take on this role in the Government.
Of course, we had hoped for a majority in Parliament. However, it is important to remember that the Conservatives secured 42.4 per cent of the vote, our highest share since 1983. In addition, compared to the 2015 election, over 2 million more people voted Conservative.
I am grateful for all of the kind comments that people have sent to me and I shall do everything in my power to be worthy of the trust that has been placed in me and, despite the obvious pressures, to continue to serve my constituents in Parliament and in Government.
